Description

Named after the island of Rhodes, long known for its ceramic traditions, this mortice door knob set reflects the same attention to material and method. Each knob is shaped by hand in ceramic using traditional moulds, then painted in soft sea blue and finished with a natural crackle glaze. During firing, the glaze cools at a different pace from the clay beneath it, creating a fine web of lines across the surface — a detail shaped by time, temperature, and the hand of the maker. The solid base is crafted from matte brass — chosen not only for strength, but for the quiet richness it brings to the piece. Its soft, brushed finish adds weight and warmth, grounding the form with lasting presence. Together, the ceramic and brass feel balanced — one bringing subtle colour and texture, the other lending support and understated polish. More than a fitting, this is a carefully made detail — designed to stand up to use, but made with a craftsman’s eye. This set is designed for internal doors with mortice fittings. It’s made with attention to every part — shape, colour, balance — and intended for homes where quality is a priority. Set includes two turning ceramic knobs (one for each side of a single internal door), an 8 mm steel spindle, and a full set of fixing screws. Once fitted, the knobs connect securely through a standard mortice turning mechanism, ensuring a dependable and smooth operation every time, not just decorative, but a reliable feature in the flow of home life. This set does not include a latch, as most customers can continue using their existing tubular mortice latch. The knobs are specifically designed to work with standard 8 mm spindle-operated latches found in most internal doors. If needed, a standard 60 mm or 70 mm latch needs to be sourced separately. The through-bolt fixing system creates a secure, long-lasting fit between the knobs. Their ceramic construction is mounted on a stable brass base, with a rounded grip shape that's easy to turn. Ideal for internal doors between 3.5 cm to 4.5 cm thick (35 mm to 45 mm), including bedroom doors, kitchen entrances, bathroom doors (with an added lock), and even French-style interior doors. The set fits most solid wood, MDF, or engineered timber doors in the UK. For European customers, the 8 mm spindle size and door thickness should be confirmed before purchase. US-based customers can install these knobs with minor adjustments — a DIY-capable person or carpenter should find it straightforward. This is not a dummy knob set and is intended for functional use on interior doors.

The Art of the Crackle Glaze

Crackle glaze begins long before the kiln. It starts with a steady hand and a well-practised eye — as the glaze is carefully brushed onto the ceramic form in measured layers. The thickness must be just so: generous enough to create depth, yet light enough to respond during firing. It’s a skill passed down in quiet repetition, where instinct matters as much as training. Once applied, the glaze settles and dries, waiting for the next stage — but its future texture is already written in the way it was laid down. Later, as it cools after firing, it begins to reveal its signature: a fine, branching network of surface lines, delicate and complex. The effect is not simply visual — it’s tactile, alive with variation. These gentle fractures, created by the relationship between glaze and body, are prized for their quiet elegance. They speak of handwork, heritage, and a kind of beauty that’s earned through patience.
