Description

Named after the island of Rhodes, known for centuries as a centre of ceramic and metal craftsmanship, this door knob set reflects that same respect for material and method. Each knob is shaped by hand in ceramic using traditional moulds, then hand-painted in deep dark blue and finished with a natural crackle glaze. The surface develops character during firing, giving the finish subtle texture and tone — clean, refined, and built to last. The solid base is made from beautiful, luxurious brass — not only structural but deliberately chosen for its visual quality. Its warm metallic finish brings weight, shine, and a sense of permanence to the piece. More than a fixture, it’s a design detail made with the same level of care as the ceramic above it. This set is designed for internal doors with mortice fittings. It’s made with attention to every part — shape, colour, balance — and intended for homes where quality is a priority. Set includes two turning ceramic knobs (one for each side of a single internal door), an 8 mm steel spindle, and a full set of fixing screws. Once fitted, the knobs connect securely through a standard mortice turning mechanism, ensuring a dependable and smooth operation every time, not just decorative, but a reliable feature in the flow of home life. This set does not include a latch, as most customers can continue using their existing tubular mortice latch. The knobs are specifically designed to work with standard 8 mm spindle-operated latches found in most internal doors. If needed, a standard 60 mm or 70 mm latch needs to be sourced separately. The through-bolt fixing system creates a secure, long-lasting fit between the knobs. Their ceramic construction is mounted on a stable brass base, with a rounded grip shape that's easy to turn. Ideal for internal doors between 3.5 cm to 4.5 cm thick (35 mm to 45 mm), including bedroom doors, kitchen entrances, bathroom doors (with an added lock), and even French-style interior doors. The set fits most solid wood, MDF, or engineered timber doors in the UK. For European customers, the 8 mm spindle size and door thickness should be confirmed before purchase. US-based customers can install these knobs with minor adjustments — a DIY-capable person or carpenter should find it straightforward. This is not a dummy knob set and is intended for functional use on interior doors.

The Beauty Behind the Crackle Glaze

Before the glaze takes on its distinctive network of fine lines, each ceramic piece is carefully prepared by hand. As seen in the image above, the artisan applies the glaze with a steady brush — a process that demands control and consistency. The aim is to coat the surface smoothly, laying the groundwork for what will later become a layered, textural finish. Crackle glaze is a traditional ceramic technique, prized for its subtle surface pattern and aged character. The effect is created during kiln firing, when the outer glaze cools more quickly than the clay body beneath it. This natural difference in temperature causes the surface to contract and gently fracture, forming a fine network of lines — a process that unfolds slowly and beautifully as the piece settles into its final form. Each pattern is entirely individual, shaped by heat, timing, and the hand of the maker. These delicate fissures are not flaws, but a quiet signature of true craftsmanship — expressive, considered, and full of depth. It’s a finish that carries the feeling of heritage and permanence, refined over generations.
